Invasion by 100,000 bats causes 'natural disaster' in Australian town

All those bats give us the heebie-jeebies if you know what we mean. One or two cute little ones are ok but 100,000??? Look at them all...

A 'state of emergency' has been sparked in Batesmans Bay after tens of thousands of bats descended on the New South Wales holiday town.

40 metre tree removed due to an old lightning strike in Tecoma, Dandenong Ranges. The tree had dropped several limbs, one narrowly missing people in the garden. The client will be milling the wood to extend the house and more natives will be planted in its place.

Teg lives in Australia and in October 2013 he bought a new Jeep Grand Cherokee for $60,000 which he said was a BIG mistake as it has been a lemon Jeep from the day he bought it. It’s had numerous issues and has been towed a number of times. I no longer trust it to transport my family safely I recorded this song and made this music clip out of frustration, as the dealer and Fiat Chrysler Australia have basically told me to bugger off. I'm not the only person who has experienced major issues with Fiat Chrysler Australia… in fact, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) had so many people complain to them, that they took action in September 2015 and announced sanctions against Fiat Chrysler Australia. One guy even tore his new Jeep apart using excavators and then set it on fire in frustration of the way he was treated by the dealer and Fiat Chrysler Australia. He also setup a facebook page to keep the pressure on the government to introduce stricter laws to hold companies like this responsible for the supply of safe and reliable vehicles in Australia.

Rare: Beautiful Whale Encounter with Paddle Boarder Captured Using Drone

Amazing! Jaimen Hudson, who flew his remote-controlled drone after learning about whales frolicking in the area, took this incredible footage of two whales and a paddle boarder captured off the Esperance coast in Australia, and the video has since gone viral...

What happened next he describes as perfect timing. 

"I set up my equipment on the footpath and flew the drone out," Jaimen explains. 

"Dave Price who lives close by, was just making his way over to the whales on his stand-up paddle board and they were really inquisitive and came over to meet him."

The water is like glass and the two whales are humongous in comparison to Dave on his board.

At times the whales get so close to him, that it's almost uncomfortable to watch.

"There was one time when the whales lifted their heads up looked up over Pricey's board, they were so inquisitive and wanted to know what he was,

"I don't think it was dangerous, the whales moved to where he was and the whole time they were very slow moving and peaceful," Jaimen said.

Extreme heat events in the land down under has managed to wipe out colonies of these species of bats - the Flying Fox, the largest bats in the world, and the Australian Bat Clinic (among others), have been swamped with arrivals of baby bats that have been rescued. Public misconceptions of these vital mammals to our ecosystem (thanks to Vampire movies and all), doesn't help the situation either. ....

When a bat mother dies, often their young are still attached and will not survive without the right care. Bat carers play a vital role in not only retrieving suffering bats, but rehabilitating them until they can be released back into the wild. When baby bats first enter rehabilitation it can be traumatising for them as they have just been separated from their mothers to which they have formed strong bonds.

The teats represent their mother’s nipple, and this makes them feel more comfortable, as does the security of the blankets which they are often snugly wrapped in.

• Bats are more closely related to humans and other primates than they are to rodents. Several studies indicate that the old world fruit bats and flying foxes may actually descend from early primates such as lemurs.
• Bats are very clean animals, and groom themselves almost constantly (when not eating or sleeping) to keep their fur soft and clean, like tiny cats.
• All mammals can contract rabies; however, even the less than 0.05% of bats that do normally bite only in self-defense and pose little threat to people who do not handle them.
