BEAM Expansion Time Lapse (NASA's Inflatable Room)

It took over 3 days, but NASA finally inflated BEAM (Bigelow Expandable Activity Module), aka the expandable/inflatable room - the first of it's kind...

This short time-lapse video shows the complete Bigelow Aerospace BEAM expansion from start to finish to its full expanded, pressurized volume on Saturday, April 28. BEAM was installed April 16 on the Tranquility module after being delivered aboard the SpaceX Dragon cargo craft.

Williams and his five crewmates will have to wait a week before venturing inside. NASA wants to make certain the chamber is airtight before opening the door. It was NASA's second shot at inflating the Bigelow Expandable Activity Module, or BEAM, named for the aerospace company that built it as a precursor to moon and Mars habitats, and orbiting tourist hotels.

BEAM barely expanded during Thursday's inflation attempt. Experts believe the soft-sided compartment was packed up tight for so long before last month's launch that the fabric layers had trouble unfolding.

NASA Launches New Website - See EARTH From SPACE - Everyday!

Snapshot of New website

Thanks to NASA, we can now view images of the sunlit Earth every day with its recently launched new website.

“Each daily sequence of images will show the Earth as it rotates, thus revealing the whole globe over the course of a day,” NASA says in a statement. The images are taken by NASA’s Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC).

The images are taken by a NASA camera located one million miles away on the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR). NASA says that once a day it will post at least a dozen new color images of the earth that were taken 12 to 36 hours earlier.
The goal of the DSCOVR mission is to maintain the capability of the U.S. to provide real-time solar wind monitoring which allow for accurate space weather alerts and forecasts.

22 Images from Oct. 17th, 2015 have been compiled to show one full rotation. (looped several times)

RED 4K Camera Captures Riveting Footage of Unique Fluid Behavior in Space Laboratory

*Before watching the vid, remember to change resolution under "Settings" to "2160p 4k" to really appreciate it in 4k.*

This footage is said to be one of the first of its kind for the NASA crew over at the International Space Station as the camera used to capture this floating ball of water containing a dissolved effervescent tablet, is capable of recording four times the resolution of normal high-def cameras...

The higher resolution images and higher frame rate videos can reveal more information when used on science investigations, giving researchers a valuable new tool aboard the space station. The cameras are being evaluated for capturing science data and vehicle operations by engineers at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

NASA | SDO: Year 5

Amazing time lapse vid from NASA's SDO capturing the sun in all its glory!.....

February 11, 2015 marks five years in space for NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, which provides incredibly detailed images of the whole sun 24 hours a day. Capturing an image more than once per second, SDO has provided an unprecedentedly clear picture of how massive explosions on the sun grow and erupt ever since its launch on Feb. 11, 2010. The imagery is also captivating, allowing one to watch the constant ballet of solar material through the sun's atmosphere, the corona.

In honor of SDO's fifth anniversary, NASA has released a video showcasing highlights from the last five years of sun watching. Watch the movie to see giant clouds of solar material hurled out into space, the dance of giant loops hovering in the corona, and huge sunspots growing and shrinking on the sun's surface.

Asteroid 2004 BL86 Has a Small Moon

If you haven't heard by now, there was an asteroid that flew-by close to earth yesterday and as we've discovered, even an asteroid can have its own moon! Actually, in 1993, a tiny moon called Dactyl was discovered orbiting the large asteroid Ida and since then, several other moons have been discovered orbiting asteroids.

This recent one, called the Asteroid 2004 BL86 that flew by Earth yesterday, is approximately 1,100 feet (325 meters) across and has a small moon approximately 230 feet (70 meters) across with it. The radar images of the asteroid were taken at its closest distance to Earth - about 800,000 miles (1.3 million kilometers, or 3.1 times the distance from Earth to the moon).
The asteroid fly-by vid below is a compilation from 20 images taken Monday by NASA's Deep Space Network antenna in Goldstone, California...

Gigapixels of Andromeda [4K]

Never mind megapixels! Check out these gigapixels of amazing images the NASA Hubble Space Telescope has ever assembled of our galactic next-door neighbour - Andromeda! This vid has received almost 6M views since being uploaded on Jan. 6, 2015...

Though the galaxy is over 2 million light-years away, The Hubble Space Telescope is powerful enough to resolve individual stars in a 61,000-light-year-long stretch of the galaxy’s pancake-shaped disk. It's like photographing a beach and resolving individual grains of sand. And there are lots of stars in this sweeping view -- over 100 million, with some of them in thousands of star clusters seen embedded in the disk.

Launch of NASA's Orion deep-space capsule

Orion - the next-generation spacecraft by NASA that promises to take 'tourists' deeper into space to Mars by the 2030s, finally had it's first test flight - and it was a success.

... Orion needs to be able to reach very high speeds and withstand extreme temperatures and radiation levels.
Orion's first test flight saw no astronauts on board but loaded with nearly 1,200 sensors to measure every aspect of the mission. That will allow NASA to assess whether the journey would have been suitable for astronauts.

The mission tested how Orion fares in the extreme conditions of space travel. NASA has designed the capsule to take up to six astronauts into deep space, and its 16ft-wide heat shield and sophisticated service module are among the features whose durability will be inspected upon return. The capsule not only survived launch and orbit, but temperatures of about 2,200C (4,000F) as it returned through Earth’s atmosphere. NASA also tested an emergency abort function developed to save astronauts in the event of a malfunction during launch. - theguardian

Space Station Astronauts Grow a Water Bubble in Space

We sure wished we had a pair of these 'red and blue stereoscopic 3D vision glasses' they recommended to view this vid but nevertheless, it was equally just as cool to watch! See the 2nd vid of the 3-D version below...

During Expedition 40 in the summer of 2014, NASA astronauts Steve Swanson and Reid Wiseman — along with European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst — explored the phenomenon of water surface tension in microgravity on the International Space Station. The crew "submerged" a sealed GoPro camera into a floating ball of water the size of a softball and recorded the activity with a 3-D camera. (Video: NASA)
Note: You will need red-blue stereoscopic 3D vision glasses to view the video.

Preparing for #CometLanding

This is history in the making folks! If this mission is successful, it could be the key to unlocking answers about the formation of the Solar System, the origins of water on Planet Earth and maybe even life itself!
On November 12th, after a decade long journey of almost 7 billion kilometres, ESA (The European Space Agency) is going to try to land on a comet - that’s a comet traveling 40 times faster than a speeding bullet, with their Rosetta spacecraft that will deploy the Philae lander on the surface of a tiny, spinning, comet called the 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko aka Comet 67P/C-G. Watch the short introductory animated video by ESA below:
