NEW Octopus Species: February 27, 2016

He's probably thinking, who the hell are you guys.
You've all probably heard by now about the recently discovered octopus species some are dubbing 'Casper the Friendly Ghost', found in the deep ocean floors off Hawaii. Well, here's a great video by oceanexplorergov, giving you a clear and crisp view of the now famous little creature...

During the first dive of the Okeanos Explorer 2016 Hohonu Moana: Exploring Deep Waters off Hawaii expedition to explore on the northeast side of Necker Island, the Deep Discoverer remotely operated vehicle encountered this octopus, which confused several of our shore based scientists who have never seen anything like it. Upon further review, this ghostlike octopod is almost certainly an undescribed species and may not belong to any yet-described genus.

New species of Galapagos giant tortoise identified

A new giant tortoise species was discovered on the Galapagos Islands by a team of Ecuadorian and international scientists. Unfortunately, there are only a few hundred of them left. The newly identified species were given the name "Chelonoidis donfaustoi," in honour of Fausto Llerena, the caretaker of Lonesome George, a male Pinta Island tortoise and the last known survivor of his species...
